In-Home Care Cost Estimator
Use this simple estimator to get a rough idea of what private-pay in-home care may cost. Care Alongside is a free matching service, not a home-care agency, and no medical information is needed.
What this estimator can help with
This page can help you plan for the kinds of non-medical help many families need at home: companionship, homemaking, personal-care help, respite care, overnight support, and live-in care.
It is meant to give you a starting point, not a quote. Real prices change based on the hours you need, the level of help, your city or state, the day of week, and the provider you choose.
If you want a clearer sense of what is typical in your area, you can also read our in-home care cost guide.
Typical private-pay cost ranges
Across the U.S., companion or homemaker help often runs about $25-$40 per hour. This kind of care can include conversation, meal prep, light cleaning, errands, and a little help around the home.
Personal-care aide support, which includes help with bathing, dressing, toileting, and walking or transfers, is often about $28-$45 per hour. More hands-on help usually costs more.
Live-in or 24-hour care is often priced differently, and many families see roughly $300-$450 per day. Some families spend a few hundred dollars a month for a few hours of help each week, while others spend several thousand dollars a month for daily or round-the-clock support.
Simple way to think about your total
A helpful way to estimate is to multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours you think you need each week, then by 4.3 for a monthly estimate.
For example, 10 hours a week at $30 an hour is about $300 a week, or roughly $1,290 a month. If the care is overnight, live-in, weekend-only, or includes a higher level of personal care, the total may be higher.
These are only planning numbers. They are not guarantees, and actual costs can vary a lot by area and provider.
What affects the price
Several things can change the final cost:
- How many hours you need each day or week
- Whether the help is companionship, homemaking, or personal care
- Whether care is needed overnight or around the clock
- Your city and state
- Whether the schedule is weekdays, weekends, or holidays
- Whether you want someone who speaks your family's language
If your family is still deciding what kind of help makes sense, our guides can help you sort through the options in plain language.
